My Plans for German Literature Month

My literary explorations are serendipitous and subject to whim, so I am cautious about joining shared reading events. I was unable to resist German Literature Month, co-hosted by Lizzy’s Literary Life and Beauty is a Sleeping Cat, partly because I am drawn to literature from the region but also because I’ve intended to read Theodor Fontane’s Effi Briest and Heinrich Böll for some time.

Those authors aside I plan to read some Kleist for the penultimate week and the following:

Week 1 – German Literature

Jenny Erpenbeck – Visitation

Week 2 – Crime Fiction

Friedrich Durrenmatt – The Judge and His Hangman

Week 3 – From Austria and Switzerland

Thomas Bernhard – Old Masters

  1. Thank you for joining us. You have some great choices here. And they nicely cover all three countries. I’m still deciding. I’m looking forward to re-read Böll and Effi Briest and Sebald’s Austerlitz is a possibility.

  5. I am interested to see what you will have to say about Visitation. I stopped reading after about one third of the book.
    I read Dürrenmatt in school and remember I liked it. That’s more than I can say for most of the other school reading projects, :).

    • Thanks for dropping by, Parrish. Sadly, due to extensive travelling this last week, my ambition outdistanced my achievement. I am hoping to catch up a little during this week.
